Blog Speak: Embracing the Digital Age

Many of us know that our kids are being raised in a digital society, and more and more, you may find yourself bringing technology into your home.  Whether it’s the iPad, iPhone, iTouch, Android or other device, inevitably our children are finding their way and are becoming true digital natives.  Not only is it in the home, but technology is slowly making its way into our schools and our system is changing rapidly.

We rallied up some of our favorite bloggers to tell us how they feel about the digital tide entering our children’s education systems.   We asked them if they’ve witnessed the change yet at home or have seen an impact in their learning experience.  Lastly, we were curious how they, themselves, feel about the changes.  Most are enthusiastic, some are cautious.  Read on.

 

Mommy NiriGone are the days when I used to fact check everything in my encyclopedia, but that does not mean that we are not on top of our game these days. The immediate response the internet brings us, means knowledge is but a click, swipe and tap away. The other day I chastised my kids for not sitting straight while eating their breakfast, telling them about how important it is for allowing food to head to the digestive systems easily. This piqued their interest and my 6 year old asked if we could Google “digestive system” so she could see some pictures of it on the iPad. Then my 4 year old asked if we could get a video on YouTube to see how food goes down the digestive system. Needless to say, I happily complied and I can assure you those visuals digested well as I have had to make very few reminders about sitting properly while eating these days.

Love That MaxA couple years ago, Max was one of the first kids in his school to get an iPad. His speech therapist was trialing a new speech communication app, the Proloquo2Go, and she thought Max would be into it because he is psyched about all things tech. From the very first second Max used it to tell me he loved the color purple, I knew it was going to be a game changer. And it has been. Max has cerebral palsy, and speech is a major challenge for him. Although I understand the words he’s speaking, many people can’t. The speech app says the words for him. At school and at home, he’s been using it for everything from learning math to reading. It’s opened up his world—but it’s also let his teachers, family and friends into it, too. That is, when his sister’s not swiping it to play Angry Birds.

Nerd FamilyThe digital experience is a huge enhancement to the learning environment of my home. As a homeschooler, I leverage the digital world to help my children get a more solid footing in the pen and paper world. A great example has happened just this month.

My two oldest children finished their math books and the next step is pre-algebra. I found 3 assessment tests online to help me make sure they didn’t have any holes before moving on and of course they did;). Both of them faltered when it came to percentages (as did I at their age). Utilizing the digital world I found free worksheets that I have printed off and they work with pencil and paper. I have also found online games that give percentages a fun slant. I have even found great youtube videos that illustrate the process in ways I would have never thought of! 

The digital experience isn’t something to be feared but embraced! It can not only help to teach but do it in a fun and successful way! At least it does in my Nerd Family!

At home, we keep our kids away from computers and iToys as much as possible.  At their preschool, they are taught Spanish by aKristin Wald native speaker who also uses some apps on an iPad to enhance their learning.  It’s not a crutch so much as a tool, so I’m comfortable with its use.  And because they don’t get to use an iPad at home, it’s very exciting for them to see it in action at school.

My kids are still young (5/3), and I know that soon enough they will be overwhelmingly exposed to all sorts of digitized fun. I also know that learning how to use whichever tool they need will take all of ten minutes, so I don’t feel like I’m stymieing their digital proficiency at all.  If it were up to me, they wouldn’t have access to computers in school until junior high.  But I think I’m an odd and lonely sort of social media luddite.

Macaroni & Cheese Chef, Boo-Boo Kisser, Monster Scarer, and Reading Teacher

… are just some of the many roles parents play.

I remember when I first learned to read. I remember when the words to my very favorite children’s book, Clotilda,  started to becomes clearer and sounding them out started to become easier.

I think about my childhood often as my oldest daughter, who at three-and-a-half, is starting to remind me of myself at that age. She has learned to write the letters in her name and while she struggles with the ‘Y’ every time, when she finally does get it, the proud look on her face warms my heart. Her interest in books is getting more and more profound. She asks me every day if today is “library day” and points out the Library when we drive through town.

Where do parents begin to teach their kids to read? I think it starts with building a love for books and stories. Town libraries offer free, weekly story-times, some for babies as young as 6-months. We’ve read books before bed nearly every single night since my kids were infants (I’m a bit of a stickler for a routine). If there was ever a night that they didn’t want to read a book (rare!), my oldest would ask us to tell her a story. If we started with anything other than, ‘Once upon a time’ and ended with anything other than ‘Happily Ever After’, we were instantly corrected.


Where does new technology come in? An app is a great way to learn to read. And it’s a guilt-free excuse to let the kids use the iPad! When learning to read books, kids are dependent upon their index finger pointing to words and saying them aloud simultaneously. In most apps, this is done automatically with words highlighting or being underlined while spoken by a narrator. There are also options to turn the narration off so that your child can read alone. Other ways to introduce a love for words and letters is stenciling. Tracing is not only important for recognition, but also for muscle-memory and small-motor control.

Using the iPad as a learning tool not only allows parents to continue the use of a device that has gained popularity with their kids, but it also helps children gain necessary life skills. Reading along with the ponies from My Little Pony or the trucks like Chuck from Chuck & Friends, and reading classic books like Velveteen Rabbit and Thumbelina – these are brands that win with kids and story lines that contain popular, important messages.

My Little Pony: Twilight Sparkle, Teacher for a Day continues to surprise and amaze us.

Twitter Party Wrap Up: Moms and Tech

Did you know that in 2010, 88% of women purchased tech products as compared to 83% percent of men?  Yep, it’s a proven stat.

With this stat in mind, last night we gathered with dozens of amazing women on Twitter to talk about MOMS and TECH.  We were curious about the gadgets they’re using, how they’re using tech and how they’re balancing their usage, as well as their kids.

We also gathered four tech bloggers to moderate and guide us as we talk about two topics close to their hearts and professional lives.  They were:  Beckie Mostello from Tech Talk for Moms, Heidi Leder from Coast 2 Coast Mom, Jacqueline Cromwell from Nerd Family Blogs and Grace Duffy from Formerly Gracie.

What did we find out?  That moms are tech geeks.  They’re using iPads, iPhones, Mac Computers, Androids, Roku, HP Laptops, Apple TV, nooks and more.  When asked what gadgets they’re currently using, they had a lot to say:

Tracyparral: I use my desktop, laptop, iPad, and Samsung tablet, and on occasion my phone.

Graceduffy: I have an obscene number of tablets in my house.

CoziFamily:  I’m such an Apple geek: Macbook, iPad, iPhone are my main gadgets.

These tech savvy moms are online often but they balance their time when the kids are around.

C2C Mom: We’re always connected!

hippie_mom: Phones are to easy for mulit-tasking so always.

nikki2kids: too many hours, but I”m always connected to the internet.

techtalkformoms: most of the day, I try to turn off when kids get home from school.

ophelan83: My kid is a techbaby. I dont ever stop him from using it because its just part of his generation

There are lots of social media moms.  Women use it to connect to other moms, they use it for work, as well as pleasure, but are definitely more careful of their use of venting on social media.  There is also a clear love for Pinterest among women, as most at our party last night expressed their love for the new, extremely popular tool.

lilstylefile: Social Media is a creative outlet for us! We use Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram on a daily basis!

IrishRed02: Yes! Its a sounding board for many facets of life: advice, questions, rants.

Women choose gadgets for functionality, not design.  They use apps to manage their busy lives, particularly calling out to Google Calendar, Cozi, Stickie Notes, Drop Box and Evernote.

And moms love educational apps. They had a lot to say about their importance:

techtalkformoms: ebooks are another mode to help a struggling reader learn to read

CoziFamily:  Agree! Book apps, educational apps. I’ll let my kids spend way more time on that than just games

@iPad_storytime: if I focus on the quality of tech use by my kid, it’s easier 2 set limits on quantity.

Calling All Parents, Teachers, Librarians and more: Reading Tips Wanted

We at Ruckus Media Group, creator of award-winning interactive storybooks for children, are looking for reading tips to stimulate children’s love of reading, both inside and outside the classroom. Who better to write those tips than you, the expert? We know that you work with children day in and day out to find that “just-right” way for each child to develop a love of reading, whether they are your own children or your students.

Please email your creative reading tip and photograph to TeacherTips@RuckusMediaGroup.com (if you are a specialist) or ParentTips@RuckusMediaGroup.com (if you are a parent). If your tip is chosen, we’ll credit the submission with your name and image, and post a link directly to your site or school. And, you’ll also be eligible to receive a $10 iTunes gift card to select your choice of stories from our library.

Toy Fair 2012 Tells Us That The Digital Toy Age Has Arrived

Last year, I wrote right here on this blog about Toy Fair 2011 and its focus on traditional toys. Yet it was clear that physical games were inching closer and closer to the world of smartphone and tablet apps. More and more companies were launching iPads for kids last year, including Fisher Price, VTech and LeapFrog. Fisher Price’s iPad stood out, and it was clear not only how toy manufacturers were noticing the digital direction in playing and storytelling but also how parents were embracing their children’s growing demands for gadgets, particularly the iPad. In last year’s post, I wrote, “While the show did feature innovative products and technologies, very few companies were represented, including our competitors. I hope that the expo expands next year to better exemplify the world of apps for children.”

Well, guess what? One year later, Toy Fair 2012 looked very different. Tech was popping out all over the place, and it was clear that major brands are taking strides to develop their traditional branded products and games around Apple products. Not only were a few digital companies present, such as Fruit NinjaAngry Birds and Cut the Rope, but other brands were obviously entering the digital mix as well. Our partner Hasbro now makes traditional games like Monopoly and The Game of Life that connect to iOS devices for digital play through apps available in the Apple Store. There’s also a new version of Lazer Tag, by NERF, where players insert their iOS device into a blaster and engage in virtual or real battles.

Animal Planet and Monsterology NUKO’s brand are joining trading cards with digital magic on the iPad with cards that tap into action using any iOS device. MushABellies’ new 3D augmented-reality game blends the game world and the real world using a smartphone device and exclusive, patented augmented reality from Gravity Jack. And WowWee introduced its App Gear line, extending the idea of connecting apps with traditional toys to create something called “amplified reality.”

So, the question is, how much more advanced will Toy Fair be in 2013? Your guess is as good as mine, but considering the visible changes that we witnessed this year, we’re very excited to see what transpires between now and then.

App Production 101: A Chat with Susan Hood, Ruckus Story Editor

Recently we’ve been delving into the process of App Production.  The other day we heard from Susan Hood, our Story Editor, about the editorial process and she told us how she works with authors, producers, art department and curriculum developers to cook up a great digital storybook.  We enjoyed the post so much that we thought we’d go back to Susan to hear more about her role here at Ruckus and her thoughts about the future of digital storytelling, what makes a good app, what role education has in what we do and more.  Here’s what Susan had to say:

Tell us about your role at Ruckus Media Group.

I’m the story editor and curriculum advisor at Ruckus. I work with our authors, producers, art department and curriculum developers.

As an author, how do you feel about the future of reading given the fact that digital storybooks are becoming so popular?

It’s an exciting time. Digital books complement bound books and the best ones can draw in a new audience. One of our authorsA Present for Milo was telling me that his son was a reluctant reader. Then one day, he realized that he could enlarge the font on an ebook. For him, suddenly, reading wasn’t so daunting! This is one small way digital books can help kids who are struggling. I strongly believe that digital books won’t completely replace traditional children’s books; it’s not an either/or proposition. But together, they can only make reading more popular.

What do you recommend to a parent who is reluctant to get their kids involved with storybook apps?

I’d say, just try them. You’ll like them! And so will your kids. Read the reviews and, just as you look for quality children’s books, look for quality storybook apps. Look for ones that use animation, activities and games to further the story, rather than ones that have games tacked on at the end. Continue to read traditional books with your child and your child will get the message: reading is important and enjoyable no matter what form it takes!

How important is the emphasis on education in digital storytelling?

I think the emphasis should be on creating great stories that take advantage of the medium. Good stories motivate a kid to learn to read. An educational curriculum built into the stories can only make them stronger, but it should be organic and invisible.

What makes a storybook a good one?

Spot the DotA good storybook is age-appropriate, uses interesting language, engages a child’s senses and emotions, invites participation, and is enjoyable for parent and child alike. For very young children, great stories use bright colors, simple, fun-to-say words and lots of repetition. As kids get older, good stories have stronger plots (with a clear beginning, middle and end), richer vocabulary, and more complex art. Grade school kids enjoy branching out, reading different genres, such as information books, folktales, mysteries and so on. 

What makes an app a good one?  Why do you think apps are so popular?

A lot of the requirements for a good story apply to apps as well. A good digital storybook should take all the ingredients that go into a good book and then add the icing on the cake—high-quality music, narration, animation, video and interactivity. I think apps are so popular because they are so portable and interactive. Kids who can’t read can listen to a story anywhere–in the car, in a tree house, wherever. And they put the child in the driver’s seat. Kids can move through the story at their own pace. If they don’t recognize a word, they can tap it and hear it repeated as often as they like.  

What do you think is the future for digital storytelling?

The future looks bright as award-winning authors and illustrators enter the field and the games and activities become more and more innovative. The downside is that the field is becoming more crowded and there are a lot of subpar apps being released. The question is how will parents and kids find the really good digital storybooks? That’s the challenge ahead!

Susan Hood was mostly recently the Children’s Content Director of Nick Jr. Magazine, published by Nickelodeon, and has been an editor at Scholastic and Sesame Workshop. She is also a children’s book author, whose first picture books will be published this fall.


 

Our Newest Partnership Promotes Science, Kids and the Universal Love of Dinosaurs!

Do you have dinosaur-loving kids?  Then you’re certainly familiar with Dino Dan, a Canadian/American television series for children seen in 100 countries around the world.  The award-winning series was created by Sinking Ship Entertainment and follows the adventures of a paleontologist-in-training and his friends, who uncover clues about the past and secrets of dinosaurs.

After announcing our recent partnerships with Cyberchase, which combines digital media with math, SeaWorld, which delves into the wonders of the sea, The Wiggles, which teaches kids valuable skills through music and fun and Crayola, which offers kids creative tools to learn, we are thrilled to announce our partnership with Dino Dan.  The brand teaches kids how to use scientific methods to explore and identify everyday problems.  As you can, we’re onto something here!

We have been granted worldwide English language rights to develop interactive DINO DAN e-books, enhanced e-books, interactive storybooks and story-based applications.   The new Ruckus digital storybooks, designed for children ages 4-8, will expand kids’ knowledge of dinosaurs and develop their scientific thinking and problem-solving skills as they build their literacy skills.  The first three storybooks will be available for mobile devices in April 2012.

With Cyberchase, Math is Everywhere (And So Are We!)

CyberchaseToday we are thrilled to announce our first partnership with a PBS property, as well as the folks at WNET!  And it’s none other than Cyberchase, a favorite of so many our own children.

You’ve seen us recently buzz about partnerships with Hasbro, Crayola, SeaWorld and most recently, the Wiggles.  And now we’re adding Cyberchase!

Cyberchase is an enthralling series that inspires children to the real practicalities of mathematics.  As education is becoming more and more important in the space of children’s apps, we are honored to be a part of what this dynamic show is bringing to the table.  The Cyberchase apps will fuse math and problem-solving interactive stories with interactive components for parents. They will be the first suite of interactive storybooks from Ruckus that promote STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning, a critical area of focus in education and the heart of Cyberchase’s mission.

We have been granted worldwide right to develop interactive storybooks based on this Emmy-award winning PBS KIDS Go! math series.  The show airs on more than 300 public television channels nationwide and features a team of curious kids who use math and problem solving to outsmart a villain cyberchasein their adventurous quest to save Cyberspace.  We KNOW that our existing Ruckus fans are going to be excited as we are about our partnership, as well as all the Cyberchase fans out there in the cyber-verse!

The storybook applications, designed to inspire confidence in and enthusiasm for math for children ages 4 through 8 will operate on iPhone, iTouch, iPad and Android-enabled mobile devices and tablets.  Ruckus will release 12 titles each year in two reading and math levels with the first titles scheduled to release worldwide with English language distribution through iTunes at the App store in April 2012, followed by Android releases later in the year.
